Falmouth Classics Photography
Missing your classic yacht and workboat racing in 2020? Here are some photographs of the 2019 Falmouth Classics to keep you inspired.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has meant that a huge number of events have been cancelled in 2020. With the tragic deaths of thousands of people these, seemingly trivial inconveniences are insignificant. As lockdown looks to be easing, we begin to look forward to a return so some form of normality.
In June 2019 I was lucky enough to be invited as a crew member on the gaff cutter, Kate Rose, to sail in the Falmouth Classics. The Falmouth Classics is a wonderful event that coincides with Falmouth’s Sea Shanty festival. Based around Falmouth Haven and broad selection of classic leisure and work boats assemble. Crew and owners mingle with members of the public who, at certain times, can stroll down the pontoon for a chat. In 2019 and impressive190 boats took part in the festival, the racing and the parade of sail.
The sheer variety of boats on display is what makes the Falmouth Classics so special. Classic fishing boats, traditional Cornish work boats and an elegant Swan yacht to small one-class racing yachts.
The magnificent Falmouth Sea Shanty festival features over 60 groups and, as you can imagine, after a hard day sailing, a few beers and a sing song does wonders for moral.
We had a great time in Falmouth and achieved a second in class for one race. I’m nott 100% sure I was the most effective crew member as I spent rather a lot of time taking pictures instead of pulling on ropes! … Sorry Captain!
