Freelance Sheffield Photographer
Now working as a freelance Sheffield photographer, I started my career as a press photographer for the Yorkshire Regional Newspapers group, working for the Whitby Gazette and Scarborough Evening news. After gaining NCTJ qualifications I worked for numerous newspaper publications, including the Northern Echo and Darlington & Stockton Times owned by the Newsquest group.
Doug Jackson Photography was established in 2007, and working from my Sheffield base, I have had assignments in helicopters, in the deepest mine in Europe. worked in Holland, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand and Spain and recently Jersey. Every job is unique and presents its own unique set of challenges. See my recent work.
Sheffield Freelance Photographer and Videographer
Whilst working as a press photographer I trained as a video journalist. I realised there were times when video content could be more advantageous than still images; although requiring a similar skill set to capture. With the ease of on-line publication many companies now see movies as a necessary tool rather than a marketing luxury. Telling the story of your business or project is no longer just about strong images and text but increasingly depends on a more comprehensive narrative. Your own voice, that can clearly express your message in a professional, exciting and cost effective way. I am Sheffield based but I take bookings throughout the UK.
My photography has been published in numerous magazines and all the national newspapers, covering both major regional news events and ‘softer’ agency generated content. I have been commissioned by marketing / PR agencies, both in Sheffield and nationally, newspapers and magazines, companies, government departments, local authorities and charities. Frequently asked questions
Usually if clients book me for a one hour shoot (typically PR Photography commissions) it will be pretty local as travel costs make it prohibitive to go to Scotland or London for a small shoot. That said, I regularly travel 100 miles for an hours commission as clients understand that they are getting a great service. Sheffield is fantastically location for a freelance photographer, in South Yorkshire, within easy driving distance of most of the North of England and only a couple of hours from London.
- 1 hour shoot: £185.00
- 1/2 day shoot: £325.00
- Full day shoot £595.00
These prices include travel for Sheffield area only; quotes are provided on a individual basis for work further afield. Many of my clients are happy to pay reasonable travel expenses, rather than risk an unknown photographer coming in from another part of the country. Which is why I work throughout the UK and am always happy to travel for commissions. As most jobs have unique requirements we do not typically set an hourly rate that covers all types of freelance photography. Video shoots may incur further cost with special editing and logo design. Give me a call and let me know your requirements.
The shoot fee and the travel expenses are often the only cost for PR, Commercial photography and video. Typically editing and image usage is included in the fee, although special editing for projects (such as product photography) or video work can incur further cost.
As a former press photographer I am used to working in different types of environments and being flexible in my approach. The equipment I use allows me to work quickly and capture the narrative of people and place. It also allows me to be creative with lighting and locations. Its imperative to tell the story and fulfil the brief although I do believe that is also important to be creative and provide my clients with dynamic, eye-catching, images. Corporate and commercial photography is often about expressing confidence and competence. Strong and bold imagery may be ideal for business, but an editorial commission may need a more natural approach. It’s all about working with the clients requirements and ultimately what you find on the day.
I began my professional photography career, as a trainee, with Yorkshire Regional Newspapers in 1999. Prior to establishing myself as a freelance photographer, I worked as a senior staff photographer for some of the North’s leading newspapers. These included the Whitby Gazette, Scarborough Evening News, The Northern Echo and Darlington and Stockton Times. Although I travel throughout the UK on assignments covering a diverse range of commissions, I enjoy living in Yorkshire because of its beauty. Since 2007 I have been working as a freelance photographer and have had my work published in many magazines and newspapers. My work has taken me around the world and I have seen some interesting places and met some wonderful people. I think the one thing about my career that I relish the most is the sheer variety; from major construction projects to fashion shoots in country houses, it is never dull. Working as an industrial photographer and construction photographer is a real eye opener. You get to see some wonderfully epic processes and I find it endlessly fascinating. PR and commercial photography are more focused on people. Meeting a new team and seeing a new business is always fascinating. However, there are several clients of mine who I have now worked with for well over 10 years. Sheffield is a great base to be working from as a freelance photographer, almost in the centre of the country.
I am often booked by marketing agencies for PR commissions, news agencies, directly by companies, organisations and charities. The assignments vary from a one hour shoot to do some quick portraits or head shots to multi-day shoots. Some clients will book me for a full day for video and stills if they are doing a re-brand on a new website. Get in touch with us to discuss your requirements and we can work together on the best and most cost-effective approach.
